Advanced Somatic Practices and Choreography: Embracing Failure (SP2)

Description:

In this module the students will have the opportunity to practically work towards the creation of a collective performance challenging the normative Body and promoting failure and transgression as liberating and highly politicized tools for performance creation. Through failure aesthetics and transgression of normative ideologies around the virtuosic body, emphasis will be placed in embracing the potentialities within failure “regognizing and celebrating the diverse elements of humanity” (Sargeant, 1995). Students will be introduced to practices of the “philosophy of availabism” (Kembra Pfahler), trashing performance, radical amateurism (S.J. Bailes), drag terrorism and reconsideration of the potentials of burlesque performances.
As formative influences, the students will be exposed to works by artists such as Vaginal Davis, John Waters, David Hoyle, Ann Liv Young, Goat Island, Jerome Bel, Marten Spangberg, Bruce LaBruce, Kembra Pfahler, Forced Entertainment, Andy Warhol, Paul Morissey a.o.
