Advanced Somatic Practices and Choreography: Somatic Investigations (SP1)

Description

Through practical explorations, this module works towards re-defining the boundaries of somatic and body practices to develop an embodied, reflexive and critical understanding of what Elizabeth Behnke (1997: 184) describes as ‘making a body’ [of work] through ‘the dynamic process of bodying’.  The module aims to enlarge the scope of body practices to include the works of Ron Athey, Jess Curtis, Keith Hennessey, Steve Paxton, Felix Ruckert, Ann Liv Young and emerging artists working in the field.  The module will aim to challenge previous conceptions of somatic practices in order to rediscover the potentials of a more visceral body.
Students will prioritize the body as the subject, tool and material for performance.  They will examine and experiment with different approaches towards embodiment and they will endeavor to cultivate sensory authority through heightened corporeal awareness.
The main aim of the module is to assist students to develop a refined and original personal style of investigating and performing the body.  The module invites the students to combine choreographic aptitude with an established and emerging personal body language.
